Watched the premiere of Saturday Night Live this weekend – how broken is this show? Man, it just isn’t funny anymore. At least the HD is glorious. All in all, there was maybe 2-3 genuine laughs in this week’s episode (the TSA skit, Brian Williams’ cameo and … and the SNL Digital Short had it’s moments). The problem is, you know they worked hard on the premiere so it can only go down from here. Not a good sign.
My tribute to SNL this week is a list of questions one concerned viewer would submit if anyone actually cared. Maybe Buzz Manager will pick up this post and someone at NBC will actually read it. Ah, probably not. Anyhow …
- Is Amy Poehler really capable of handling the news anchor job?
- Dane Cook was the biggest and best host we could get for the premiere?
- Does anyone else thing that Seth Meyers is trying too hard?
- Should we try some LA style and drop some of the NY style?
- Is there anything else to make fun of rather than cable news and politicians?
- Are there any real standout stars in the cast?
- Is it possible that shows about SNL (Studio 60, 30 Rock) are more interesting than SNL itself?

Is Tiny Fey still there? I heard she was leaving SNL, has that happened yet or is this her last season?
The dreaded delay of US TV getting here in South Afrca strikes again, but I like Amy Poehler so I hope she pulls it off. Will be looking forward to getting the series in 2189
I couldn’t agree more. I was actually excited about Dane Cook hosting. I thought he did a pretty good job last time. This time it just seemed to fall flat and he didn’t actually seem to be in a lot of the skits. I did think the Hugo Chaves skit was hilarious.
Josh, I think you hit the nail on the head. They just don’t have the cast they used to. They need those Adam Sandler, Jimmy Fallon, Will Ferrell, Chris Farley, Dana Carvey, Rob Schneider, Mike Meyers, Molly Shannon and to go old school Eddie Murphy, Dan Ackroid, Steve Martin . . . type personalities that make the show interesting. I have had a blast watching the top 100 Moments of SNL on Satellite lately but you don’t see any of the new stuff on their. I wonder if we’ll see it last much longer unless they get an influx of good talent soon. I guess they could always have Ashlee Simpson back on the show to sing (or not sing). That stirred up some controversy.
Ok, I actually disagree. I’m a big fan of the Mike Meyers/Dana Carvey days, but I thought the premiere this week was funny. I laughed harder than I had in awhile. I only watched until about Weekend Update (which I did NOT think was funny…hopefully Seth Meyers grows into the role). But, the TSA sketch and the Hugo Chavez ones were hilarious. And Dane Cook had me and Nicole cracking up last night as she watched it for the first time and I saw it again. I may be living in a hole, but that was the first time I’d actually heard him….heard a ton about him, but never heard him. By the way, any Saddleback people reading this – I have decided that Dane Cook = Eric Frankman. Here’s some of my cast thoughts:
Amy Poehler – hilarious
Andy Samberg – hilarious; my wife’s current favorite
Kristen Wiig – not so funny…needs to go
Darrell Hammond – also not funny
Kenan Thompson – funny, but always the same
Jason Sudeikis – another funny newer guy
Bill Hader – ditto
GREAT comments. Here’s some thoughts:
Amy Poehler – pretty funny, but gets loud when she knows she isn’t and hopes that covers it up. Not strong enough to take the news over. No way.
Andy Samberg – easily the most potential of any cast member of the show. Still haven’t seen him enough to be sure, but when they let him on the air I dig it. What if they just did a show of Digital Shorts?
Kristen Wiig – average
Darrell Hammond – average
Kenan Thompson – average
Seth Meyers – could be funny, not made for the news.
Jason Sudeikis – pretty funny, just above average. Has potential though.
Bill Hader – could be great, but so far still average.
I still wonder how much of this falls on the writers anyhow, since that’s what these guys are given each week.

I would agree, the shows about SNL are stellar (well, I haven’t seen 30 Rock, since it has yet to premiere), but I LOVE Studio 60.
