  1. I can’t vote 40 – 45 since I’m already there. I know I don’t want to do youth ministry if and when I become ineffective at it. I would rather move on than damage a ministry by being a crusty old man who is stuck in a rut. Hoping that doesn’t happen though.

  2. I turn 45 tomorrow! Do I get to become a crusty old man next year????

  3. I’m 31, but that seems *old* a lot of the time – compared to the other youth pastors in the area.

  4. I don’t have any plans of leaving youth ministry. I’ve only been in it for a year but I’ve loved every second of it! A handful of us are actually preparing to leave for a missions trip to L.A. in a few weeks so I’m super pumped about that. I think when we start to feel burnt out, we need to reevaluate why we’re in youth to begin with; I’m there because I love the kids and want to help them develop/maintain the spiritual foundation necessary to face what all they face the second they step outside the church doors. I guess you could call me a lifer!

  5. @thespiderman Happy Birthday and welcome to crustyhood

  6. The idea of using Youth Ministry as a “Jumping Point” as always bothered me. Some people think that youth work is a entry level position for paid ministry. One God-called, Spirit-led ministry shouldn’t be a looked at like its inferior to another.

  7. I’m in the oldies but goodies camp. I have been a volunteer hs leader since I was 23 years old. I am now 50. I have often wondered when a person becomes too old. But God has continued to call me here and I will stay as long as He calls me to be in this position. I have found in our group that our kids have such dysfunctional homes that a mother figure is just what they need. In our group of 35 kids, 4 girls’ mothers have died in the last 4 years! However, in order to provide balance, we use a lot of 20-somethings as our leaders. Our group continues to grow and one of the best things our kids say is that we are a family.

  8. My youth pastor from High School, left to go work at the Seminary in Youth related progaraming and ran that…Now he is the Director of Youth Ministry for the Vocation and Education portion of the National Church. He is working to help teens and young people who are feeling a call to serve, find a way to get educated and find their fit.

I re-use, Recycle, revise more things that I learned working with him, then he probably remembers doing.

  9. 10+ years in ministry, 40 yrs old, and still loving middle school youth. My prayer is that I can be 85 with a cane in one hand, a freesbe in another, & loving on middle school kids.
