Josh GriffinMore PostsPOLL DAY: Which version of the Bible do you use?

I use the New Living Translation primarily in teaching, what about you? Sorry if I didn’t get yours on there, I tried to hit most of the major ones at least.

  1. great question! i’ve been wondering this myself for a while now, we want to be relevant to the atmosphere but not dumbing it down for the students. tough line to find thats for sure.

  2. Message for youth group and NRSV (New Revised Standard Version) for personal study.

  3. I think you would have gotten more response for it if you would have used New Revised Standard Version instead of The Revised Standard Version. A lot of us mainliners use NRSV. The Bibles I bought for the youth room are NLT.

  4. ESV is my Bible of choice.

  5. I use the ESV.

  6. Our church ask all the ministries to stick to the KJV. Even though that is not Bible of choise, I use NASB, I think we must keep this matter on the downlow because we don’t want to confuse our students on what Bible they should or shouldn’t not use. Bible translation has caused a huge debate among Christians and it’s not worth our time to fight or argue about it. We, as the church of Jesus Christ, have many more things that God has called us to do that are more important than Bible translation. They are all good, use whatever one you enjoy and let God speak to you through His Word!

  7. I’d always used NIV, but a couple of years ago I switched to the Holman Christian Standard. I’ve recently been reading the ESV & like it as well.

  8. I use the ESV primarily as that’s what our church uses – but there are often times when I use a version with a more modern feel for talks. The new ESV Study Bible rocks!

  9. ESV is the version of choice for me. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you need to.

  10. I use the ESV for study (my favorite), the NRSV for its inclusive language, and the NLT for teaching.

  11. we use tniv for the most part at church.

  12. another ESV guy here

  13. ESV, where its at!

  14. one more ESV user

  15. Lots of good English translations . . and lots of really poor ones. Need to encourage pastors to emphasize the importance of the words God inspired – not just vague concepts that can be couched in cliches or idioms or cutesy phrases.
God chose exact words . . so our translations should be as “formally equivalent” rather than just a general/dynamic translation.
ESV, Holman, NKJV (my choice) are far more accurate and reflective of what GOD said than the NIV or NLT types.

  16. ESV when studying with the new ESV Study Bible! But our church is reading through the Chronological Bible this year so I have been reading the NLT version.

  17. Did a poll throw up on MTDB yesterday? There are polls everywhere!

Josh – thank you for what you do – I love MTDB!

  18. ESV to study. NLT when teaching to HS & JH students.

  19. Wow…another
ESV for personal study, NLT or even The Message when teaching

  20. I prefer the NIV, but our church requires us to use the NRSV. In the Beach House (our youth room), I have as many versions as I can get and each person there gets a different one (ok, we have more students than versions but you get the idea).

When we read a verse, we read it in a handful of different versions then discuss what we like about each and pick our favorite to reread and study.

We also ask which version is which to help the students be able to realize the differences. KJV is always the obvious one :)
