Josh GriffinMore PostsBook Review: A Whole New Mind

Just wrapping up the thoroughly enjoyable book by Daniel H. Pink, A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future. Being an avid right-brainer (creative, rule bender vs left-brainer analytical, by the book) myself, I was interested in how we were going to take over from a system dominated and so rewarding of the left.

In short, the book makes a strong case about the future of American innovation and economy – how abundance, Asia and automation are helping devalue the traditional analytical thinking and forcing us to tell stories, play, create and design. The payoff of the book is basically that R-directed thinking is the wave of the future, but both left and right brains are needed in the new world we live in. There are all sorts of implications for youth ministry – my mind immediately was drawn to chapters on empathy and meaning, how important it is to feel needs and have a purpose for life. A good book – not too heady either. B+

  1. this book was so much more than a B+ for me. i think it would be in my top 10 books that i’ve read in the past 10 years (i read it about 4 years ago, i think). it’s one of those books that was more than just an interesting read, but one that actually influenced my thinking; and i still have ideas and concepts from the book popping up in my mind from time to time.

  2. Did I just hear you say that world caters to the left-minded analytical thinker? Josh, are you kidding me?! We live in a postmodern world where the right-brained thinkers have already seized almost every sphere of society. Examples: music, art, politics, judiciary circles (extreme social activism versus constituational interpretation is a product of right-brained thinking), it has seized the good sense of the church at times, and even the business world in many regards has already transformed into a right-brained industry. It is not something of the future. It is already here! Now, don’t get me wrong, I value creative thinking because I have very little of it, but the takeover seems to already be upon us in my estimation.

  3. Hey Josh,
