I did some retreat speaking years ago -- it seems like another lifetime -- and I realized that the success or failure of such an event depends entirely on the person booking the speaker (or musician) fully conveying their expectations.

The biggest danger is when a speaker has a "set performance" that he/she "does" and tries to overlay that on every speaking engagement that comes along. I would tend to talk to the person who wanted to book me for about ten minutes, and then usually, within five minutes of hanging up the phone, I knew where I felt that particular event should go. It was always fresh each time, too. In a world where speakers are "borrowing" material at a rapid pace, I feel guilty to this day if I am recycling my OWN stuff.

GREAT tips, josh. Think how much headache and confusion could be headed off by a short conversation on the front end.
