3 Ways Youth Ministry Can Support the Church
Youth ministry is not an island unto itself. It is not a separate ministry of the church, doing its own thing. It is a part of a greater whole, and when we think of ourselves as a part of what God is doing throughout the congregation we will only serve the church better. Here’s some easy principles to help your church win and see youth ministry as a vibrant part of the whole, not a drain on the resources and facilities.
Clean up after yourself
Simple rule: leave it better than when you got it. Clean out the church vans, if you really want to shock a trustee, wash it and fill it up after your youth activity, too. Assume your youth room is going to be used by everyone, so make sure it is clean and ready to go for someone else. There’s nothing worse than the joy of a great spiritual high being sucked out of you when you drop the ball in this area.Plan an event that supports the church
Find a way to support other parts of the church – don’t always be inward focused. How can you suport the mission efforts of the church? Can you serve the children’s ministry? This year we’re doing a special Halloween party for the children of our church put on by students in small groups. It wasn’t that our children’s ministry needed our help, it was because we want to support the church and give opportunities for our students to serve.Be the first to be flexible
Youth ministry is often times at the bottom of the totem pole, so let’s embrace it! Your space isn’t sacred – learn that now or pay the price later. If something trumps your activity, fight to find a way to make it work rather than fight off people moving in on your territory. There are hills you should die on, but offer up your flexibility and whole-church minded heart first.
