Josh GriffinMore PostsWeight Loss the Old Fashioned Way

Well, we‘re just about done with The 75-Day Challenge and at best I’ll come in second place. Honestly, I’ve fallen just a bit off the wagon the past few days, so I might even have to settle for third. Still though, I’m happy with losing 30 lbs in 2 and a half months. Some people have asked how I did it, so here are the details:

  • Eat Right – I tried to stick to a “Vita-Shake” for breakfast, a decent lunch and supper. No snacks, no desserts, lots of salads and fish. This was by far the hardest part of this whole process – I’ve discovered that food is my natural social outlet, and how even pastorally I default to coffee or lunch.
  • Supplements – I took all sorts of witchcraft voodoo stuff, all natural supplements that help digestion and lots of vitamins. About 20 pills a day!
  • Exercise – I walked give or take 4 miles a night. It took just under an hour, and I used Google Maps to mark out a little trek that was exactly a 2-mile loop in our community I would do twice. The time was harder to give up then I thought it would be, though I managed to knock out a couple of audiobooks and walked in silence to process, too.

Of course, I’m still at a svelte 296 lbs, so I might need to still track on this when the game is over?

Josh GriffinMore PostsInsider Names Keeps Outsiders Out

This weekend my dad visited Saddleback, and one of the main questions he had after the adult service was – what exactly is Summer Spectacular? It was mentioned in passing from stage … and associated with the set built on stage, but none of it made sense to him. As we talked about it that afternoon, I wondered how many other people visiting our church wondered the same thing.

Now, the insiders of the church would know exactly what it is, our family has been looking forward to it for weeks. The entire church property takes on a whole new life and about 4.6 kajillion kids descend on our place for a vacation-Bible-school-on-steroids type of program for children. But someone there for the first time would have no clue what that even is, much less appreciate the magnitude of effort that goes into it or realize the benefit they could receive. It is easily one of the best things we do all year for children, the church is so proud of it and it changes lives for Christ.

So no harm meant using it as an example for a greater point – and we’re by no means immune from it either. Our HSM (stands for High School Ministry, in case you’re new here – ha!) summer calendar had a line that read “Ensenada.” That is simply the name of a place in Mexico, so not super helpful for anyone who didn’t know the legacy of the annual mission trip there over Spring Break. I wonder if ambiguous ministry names and clever-but-not-clear event names are hurting ministries, rather than building identity.

I think we keep people away without even realizing it.

I’m all for branding, and I think there’s a place for some insider stuff in the church. I’m not suggesting we rename events to lame things like “Summer Bonfire at the Lake” or “Movie Under the Stars That Starts at 7PM Don’t Forget the Blanket” – but too often we ask the uninitiated to learn a new vocabulary to understand us, or worse yet don’t bother to think about them in the first place.

All I’m saying is … if you’re on stage making an announcement, designing a summer calendar or talking about an event you do every year and you’re sure everyone is just counting the seconds until it is over … remember, a bunch of people listening to you probably have no idea what you’re talking about.

Josh GriffinMore PostsHSM Weekend in Review: Volume 58

dad_jg_roadtrip_hsm

Weekend Teaching Series: The Road Trip (week 3 of 5)
Sermon Title: “Temptation”
Sermon in a Sentence: We must overcome many obstacles on the road of life – this week we take a look at temptation.
Weekend Scale of Difficulty: 4 out of 10
Service Length: 66 minutes

Understandable Message: This weekend was pretty straightforward – we were talking about temptation in Sin City. Really – how “What Happens in Vegas” DOESN’T stay in Vegas at all. The focus of the video talk was to help students not put themselves in a situation where they’ll be tempted, and where to find help if they do. We had a small group panel-type of interaction between the videos for some live discussion on stage about the topic as well.

Volunteer/Student Involvement: Students ran cameras, lights, sound and directed the weekend. Volunteers jumped in to greet students and sat with them in the service. My dad was visiting the service – first time he’d ever been in The Refinery and seen us in action – awesome!

Element of Fun/Positive Environment:We had a little cowboy shootout at the beginning of the service, where the winner of the Nerf duel could score a CD of the Bar J Wranglers. They were an amazing cowboy acapella group we discovered during the Road Trip through Jackson, Wyoming. Of course, the CD was autographed, so that only sweetened the deal. We also played a trailer for To Save a Life, which we were able to screen for a few of our students as well. The movie, which hits theaters January 2010 is looking to be a must-see for youth ministry students and their non-churched friends (read my review here).

Music Playlist: That’s What You Get (Paramore cover), Sing Sing Sing, Tear Down the Walls, Your Love is Strong, Til I See You

Favorite Moment: This week I think it was the actual video that was my favorite. Vegas had all sorts of great imagery to support the topic of temptation, and I think the Road Trip series is starting to hit stride. Just two more weeks until we’re done!

Up Next: Road Trip video series — Loneliness

Really enjoyed a night at the ballfield this week, watching the Angels squeak one past the Twins in extra innings. Grandpa took the whole gang out for a night at the ball park – even managed to catch a bag of peanuts from the guys singing “buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks” during the 7th inning stretch. Great game, great times.
