Last month I wrote a short clip for Group Magazine that will appear in an upcoming issue. Thought we could have some fun with it here on the blog now after the fact. Here’s three of 10 Things You Shouldn’t Say in a Job Interview, have you got a few more to add just for laughs?

10. Hey, I think there’s a misprint here. Did you forget one of the digits in the salary?
8. Sure, I’m happy to count summer camp as a week of vacation.
4. Oh yeah, my spouse is definitely part of the “bargain” here.

best_yeareer.jpg

Best Year Ever Week 2 of 2 is now in the can, what a great weekend! We had a great cover song from Foo Fighters up front, then transitioned into a nice welcome and funny Student Zone video. We continued to plug texting, and were super excited to see how many students got our innagural text this week. After a game of Reverse Cell Phone Shootout (we call someone in the crowd instead of them calling us) I did the series recap and set up the night. My favorite part was student testimonies of putting these principles into action – then Doug Fields led us in part 2 of Best Year Ever by emapasizing walk with Jesus. So fun!

A little backstory for this video … during our summer planning meetings for HSM everyone read PDYM and took the test. For extra credit, Alanna performed a song to help her win the grand prize. Fun!

SZ Air

Here’s a shot of Saddleback’s campus from the air taken this morning by a friend. The most amazing part of it is the size of the Student Zone compared to the other buildings on campus. This thing is going to be HUGE!

I also enjoyed looking at in in Google Maps – the satellite image is from a year ago or so, so you can see where the Student Zone is outlined in paint just before construction. June can’t get here soon enough – I want to move in!

The Office – without a doubt, the best show on television. If you haven’t watched it, I can’t begin to explain how unreal that is to me. With the strike happening right now, I’m going through withdrawl, but it was still easily is the best thing on TV in 2007.

Josh GriffinMore PostsThe Heart of Youth Ministry

I was asked to write a quick paragraph to be put in the Group National Youth Ministry Conference notebook. Here’s my take on what is the heart of youth ministry:

The heart of youth ministry is coaching, caring and challenging. Our programming team landed on these words a few months ago as we were preparing the evening general sessions of this very conference. I’ve been thinking about them almost daily in the trenches of youth ministry.

Youth ministry is about coaching kids to make the right decisions and having the life God intended. It is about leading them to Jesus and helping them develop the disciplines of a dedicated spiritual life. It is about caring for them when they need extra care or get lost. It is about meeting those needs with love, and helping them find authentic community. Finally, it is also about challenging students to take a stand and to give themselves away. To fully dedicate their heart and life to their Savior Jesus.

Coaching, caring, challenging — these are at the very heart of youth ministry.
