Enjoyed a night out with the interns last night – great to be at Dodger Stadium with lots of great food, even if the actual game was a little boring.

Josh GriffinMore PostsOrigins: Session 3

Session 3 of Origins is just wrapping up, started with an interesting rap about television evangelists, and another talk by Erwin McManus, Some thoughts:

  • We have a culture of Christians wanting to be fed.
  • My job is not to feed Christians, but make them hungry.
  • We don’t need to eat, we need to exercise.
  • We teach the Bible on Sunday, so people don’t live it out on Monday.
  • Maturity is the gap time between learning and obedience.
  • Don’t beat up on anyone reaching people for Jesus.
  • I want to be indispensable when I’m here and dispensable when I’m gone.
  • The power of community is willing to be led when someone’s gifts are stronger than yours in a particular area. At some times, we all need to be a follower.
  • The only limit to your effectiveness is the depth of your humility.

Josh GriffinMore PostsOrigins: Session 2

Erwin just finished session two here at Origins, this time focusing on Faith, Hope and Love – and centered it around the story of Mosaic. Here’s some of the things I learned or want to process later.

  • We tend to program what we’re not good at.
  • An eagle leader soars above and has great visions.
  • A hawk leader swoops down on it’s target and is focused.
  • It is far more important to change what people care about then what people believe. (really?)
  • We believe in so much, but care about so little.
  • We must move from babblers to changers of the course of history.
  • Are you leading just enough to keep your job?
  • Is it possible that when someone leaves church they are moving toward Christ?

Josh GriffinMore PostsThere’s a Dude Laughing SO Loud

There’s a guy sitting behind our group that must just LOVE Erwin McManus’ humor. He’s got the loudest, and most generous laugh I’ve ever heard. I wish I could record it for you all to enjoy, too …

Josh GriffinMore PostsOrigins: Opening Session

Fantastic opening session this morning as Origins kicked off. They had a fun programming piece called Conference Man, a conference Groupie that interrupted the main emcee. Fun. Here’s some of the highlights of Erwin’s opening talk, based on the passage from Acts where Paul is on Mars Hill:

  • Stop caring about what Peters and Marthas say, and start carrying the message of Christ.
  • God is looking for men and women who will go to the few, that are seemingly ignored.
  • Paul specifically tailored his message to reach people who had no idea of who Jesus was.
  • When someone enters your community of faith, they also hear your subtext.

Josh GriffinMore PostsCharacter Counts – Erwin McManus

Erwin McManus is teaching right now on character, he used the NFL Draft as an opening illustration – about how character supposedly counts, but at the end of the day the player’s ability is most valued. Every team thinks they can “work with him” but in the end often times they get burned.

  • Sustained success cannot happen without character.
  • You need less power to motivate others when you have integrity they can follow.
  • Is your character becoming more whole?
  • Can you take on greater challenges than what you just completed? Can you be trusted with more power and influence?
  • A whole person is a more generous person.
  • Integrity is the pathway to courage.
  • Your actions create a reaction, there is a cause and effect to your morality and character.
  • When you tell a person what to do, you decrease their humanity. Let them solve the problem and develop character.
  • The only thing that develops courage is humility.
  • Humility makes us faithful.

Josh GriffinMore PostsMeyers Briggs Test Results

Just finished taking the Meyers Briggs test – I’ve taken it before but it’s fun to get an update and see if anything is chaning. Not much, apparently:

  • Where do you get energy from? Extroversion
  • Where do you get information from? Intuition
  • How do you make decisions? Feeling
  • How do you organize? Perceiving
