Book Review: The $5 Youth Ministry

Josh on July 21st, 2009

Just finished up reading the new book by Todd Outcalt,  The $5 Youth Ministry. It is essentially a reference book of cheap games, fundraisers and experiences to create community on a tight budget. I love the disclaimer in the front of the book essentially giving people permission to use what they want and discard the rest – these all aren’t for everyone, but there’s definitely some great ideas in there for you to drop into your ministry. For me, “idea books” like this usually springboard my mind into creating something that would work in our setting. Good book of ideas – solid in tough economic times like these. A-

Stole a couple of my favorite ideas from the book so you could get an idea of the content:

E-Bay® Sale
You probably have people in your congregation who’ve heard of eBay®, but don’t know how to buy or sell anything on this popular website. Organizing a youth group eBay® sale is one way to get these folks informed and involved. Some of your teenagers could direct this project or perhaps a few adults who are veterans with the online service. Invite people from your church to bring in items that can be photographed and cataloged. Set up your payment service, post the items on eBay®, and use this to fund youth ministry efforts.

Phone-a-Lesson
Think about people in your congregation or community who might be able to speak to your youth with expertise, passion, and concern on a variety of topics. You likely have coaches, school administrators, business executives, nonprofit leaders, or popular personalities in your area who would welcome the opportunity to speak to your teenagers. As a first step, invite them to speak to your teenagers face-to-face. But if they can’t visit in the flesh, consider a Skype™ or iChat conversation. You can find the necessary software online, and it allows you to see the person you are talking to via the Internet. It’s a fast easy way to create a lesson.
