Book Review: The Martha Rules
Just finished up reading The Martha Rules by none other than Martha Stewart. And while I took a lot of flak internally for reading this one, I’m glad I did because I love a look outside my specific field. I try to pick up a business book (this one was a gift) every 4th book I read or so (read my other book reviews here).
The Martha Rules is a decent read. While I have little or no authentic appreciation for her illustrations of wine tasters, greenhouses and caterers, I can still appreciate her entrepreneurial journey and a collection of what she’s learned. The book goes after the 10 rules for a successful business:
- What’s passion got to do with it?
- Ask yourself, what’s the Big Idea?
- Get a telescope, a wide-angle lens and a microscope
- Teach so you can learn
- All dressed up and ready to grow
- Quality is everyday
- Build an A-team
- So the pie isn’t perfect? Cut it into wedges
- Take risks, not chances
- Make it beautiful
In short, a good book with transferable principles that pulls from a bunch of areas I know little about. Still though, I’m amazed at how much from the business world best practices can be transferred to student ministry. B-
