How to Handle Success in Youth Ministry

I loved this article over on PDYMBlog.com about success in youth ministry. Here’s a clip of it, head there for the rest – a must read!

As is with most things, when we are successful or things seem to be going right, we usually don’t stop to evaluate. I have found that if we do not constantly evaluate, in good times and in bad, we get an inappropriate view of ourselves. Below are just a couple of keys to handling success properly:

Success is NOT about YOU!
This is usually big mistake #1. We begin to think that the success is based on the things that I am doing. In essence, we just weasel God right out of the picture. Now I am sure none of us really tries to forget about God’s role–In fact many times we still credit Him, but deep down, we can begin thinking things like, Students are showing up because of the program I created. Or lives are being changed because of what I am teaching. Obviously it is not about you. God has just chosen to use you in this area. I personally think that when we begin to get too much focused on ourselves is when things begin to fail.
