Hey Tommy - I did read the book, and would definitely recommend it to others. Honestly though, Simple Church (the original book) resonate with me quite a bit more. Hey, read them both! JG

Chase- Same for me. I worked 40-50 hours a week full time job, and was a volunteer youth pastor for three years! Adding about 20 hours a week serving. When my job ended in Dec of last year, God moved me into a full time youth pastor position. I LOVE it! It really has made me appreciate volunteers, I could not do ministry with out them. Thanks for serving teens Bryan and Chase!

chase, thanks, I appreciate it. Actually serving was really good for us, as we were usually serving as a family. so while it was more things to be done, we were doing them together and it was a way for our kids to learn what it meant to be servants..

Bryan- Great comment and input and I'm sure your every youth pastor's dream volunteer for the hard efforts you put in! However, sounds like you might need to think about scaling back your volunteering a bit with your busy career. I've been there before; working 60-70 hrs a week and never seeing my wife, I quit and moved to Cali and a couple years later found myself in a youth pastoring position, which I never imagined. You might too one day ;) Work hard at "church and work," but work harder on your family and your walk with the Lord! Just a thought...

so Josh I am very happy for you and all the youth pastors that are able to carve out schedules that give a great work life balance. My only comment in this is to remember your volunteers in all of this. I was a volunteer in youth ministry for five years. I work a full time job, sometimes 50-60 hours a week, travel, even right now I am on a troubleshooting conference bridge with a customer... On top of that, I volunteered 10-15 hours a week supporting youth ministry and other things at church. Most all of my fellow volunteers were in the same position, whether they had a job, or were full time students, or full time parents. and on top of that were volunteering. When the staff is celebrating their near perfect work life status and how they are holding to their 40 hour week and the volunteer is on hour 60+ it can be a bit of a smack in the face...

My $.02 worth

Great reminder and encouragement to focus on our families. When you are single or just married, it is so easy to work, work, work. But as your family begins to grow, it becomes increasingly more important for you to make them a priority and be very intentional about being with them. If we fail to make goals like your list then I believe we will look back at a ton of missed opportunities later in life. Thanks Josh! I need to work less.

One of the biggest ministries we are given is our families. Lately I too have been sacrificing mine on the alter of ministry. You have a great list there Josh. In keeping with youth ministry tradition, I am going to "borrow" some of those for myself. Thanks for being transparent, and leading from a far.

Hey Josh!

Thanks for being practical, bro. I'm trying to balance my life as well. I juggle working part-time for Christ Fellowship Miami, http://www.cfmiami.org , & First Priority of South Florida, http://www.firstpriority.cc . Two awesome ministries, but both always have something that can be done.

Have you read "Simple Student Ministry"? My High School Pastor, now boss, wrote it along with Eric Geiger to help remember that we are the church, we are called to make disciples and now the challenge of doing only things that facilitate discipleship.

Check it out here at http://www.jeffborton.com

I read on Kurt Johnston's blog a while back that he read it and he recommends it for others: http://www.simplykurt.com/youth-ministry-leadership/what-im-reading-2/

Ever check it out?
