Josh GriffinMore PostsDear Senior Pastor

This new article from Walt Mueller on Simply Youth Ministry is really a good one. Here’s a clip from his letter to senior pastors on behalf of their youth workers, head there for the full article:

Dear Pastor,

I’ve asked your youthworker to forward this letter on to you. It’s about the kids in your congregation and the powerful role that you play as their pastor in their spiritual nurture.

I know that you’ve got teenagers sitting in your congregation every week. From your vantage point up front, you may spot them doodling, daydreaming, napping, zoning out, or even text-messaging. At times, it becomes painfully obvious that their eyes are lying. Even though those eyes may be focused on you, the young person behind the eyes is somewhere else. All this is evidence of a growing reality we face in our churches today: Many teenagers feel disconnected from the person in the pulpit — and as a result, the message as well. This troubling fact points to the need for pastors to intentionally listen to, understand, and reach out to students in a way that facilitates students’ connection and engagement with you, the messenger, and the life-changing message you’ve been called to preach.

What can you do to foster deep and significant connections with the emerging generations that extend from the pulpit to the pew, in order to point young people to the cross and new life in the Kingdom? Our pastoral lives must be marked by several core characteristics that are part of who we are and how we minister in our students’ postmodern world. We should prayerfully and intentionally develop these characteristics as part of our ministry strategy. They each reflect the earthly ministry of Jesus and effective missionary efforts throughout the history of the church.

Enjoyed Mark Batterson’s thoughts here at the Summit today. Here’s a clip from his blog:

Really enjoyed sitting around a round table with a group of pastors from across the country and talking with Rick Warren. Just thought I’d share a few things that made my synapses fire in new ways. Rick is the king of one-liners! Has a unique way of saying so much with a few words.

“Every conflict is the byproduct of immaturity.”
“You cannot have control and growth.”
Art needs a frame.”
“Be a proponent of the new not an opponent of the old.”

Just read over Perry Noble’s thoughts on the first two sessions here at the PD Summit. Here’s a clip, great stuff happening over there:

The church that doesn’t want to grow is saying to the world, “You go to hell…we’re doctrinally correct…you go to hell.”

Every church caters to somebody. If you don’t believe me–change your music style next week. A church either caters to selfish church people are either those who don’t know Christ.

It takes UNSELFISH people go grow a church.

“I don’t care if you love to preach…do you love the people you preach to?”

I am unafraid to tell people the truth because I love them.

Sixth, if you want to make it in ministry–make time for daily renewal. Divert daily–withdraw weekly and abandon annually.

Do things on a daily basis that de-stress you. If you are going to de-stress…don’t do something competitive.

“Are you taking a day off every week?” (Dead silence!!!) God made the Sabbath for our benefit. If you are not taking a day off you are breaking one of the ten commandments. Do NOT call it your day off…call it your Sabbath!!!

Matt McGill knows how to blog. He needs to do it more – but right now he’s on a run during this series of panels. Check out his stuff, here’s a clip:

Each person shared their ministry context and a few success stories…Some common themes:

  • Empowering the individuals of the church
  • Reaching out to the pain medication centers…bars, strip clubs, battered women shelters, etc.
  • Not the gospel of salvation, but the gospel of the kingdom
  • 2 of the 5 came from “radical, uncontrolled” lives… Not surprising that this background would lead to the compassion
  • Definitely: top down leadership … Each pastor was passionate for evangelism

About to trade in Blacksite: Area 51 for the Xbox 360 after a couple of really fun an entertaining evenings. I think the premise of the game is great, there’s a cool story and great graphics to enjoy. It does nothing to reinvent the 1st person shooter genre, but just manages to deliver everything solidly. Bullets from your weapons do real damage and foes take about what you would think they should to bring down. Everything seems fairly balanced and all in all it is a really fun game to ‘run and gun’ through. While a few different enemy types would be welcomed and there were a few “pull you out of the experience” quirks to the game – it is really enjoyable title.

Coming out the same day as Halo 3 last year made it invisible to me until now, but I was glad to play through it this week. Super fun, little replayability and short-lived but good times along the way. B+

Josh GriffinMore PostsVideo Game Review: Assault Heroes 2

Just finished up playing Assault Heroes 2 on the Xbox Live Arcade (read my review of the original here).

While there’s some great graphical upgrades to the game, the sequel takes a few missteps that bummed me out near the end. Most of the original gameplay is intact, with super new bosses, an expanded vehicle selection (you can hijack selected enemy vehicles) and a new weapon was added to the mix. The game plays great and looks super for the most part, but when you move to the first person flight levels the game takes a serious turn for the worse. Fortunately, there are only a couple of those levels and the rest remains what you would hope for in a sequel.

All in all worth $10, but both better and worse than the original game. B+

img142.jpg

Thought I would post this cool picture from Saturday night of our Global Soles light up status board. Real simple – just rope lighting that forms the numbers that can be updated each week. We’re at 16,500 or so as of this writing, with 5 weeks to go. Looks like the students should hit 20,000 pairs of shoes – which would be astonishing!
