Josh GriffinMore PostsHappy 4th of July from the Dominican Republic

Just joined up with our mission trip to the Dominican Republic – this is the first time I’ve been out of the United States during the 4th of July! Kurt Johnston and I (along with the amazing team here) will be teaching a 1-day Purpose Driven Youth Ministry Conference for 300 youth workers in the morning.

Excited to be here, but miss the family and fireworks for sure!

Josh GriffinMore PostsLegoland, Here We Come!

legolandtitle

As you may have read before here on the blog, we take 6 little vacations a year. They range from the short weekend getaway to a full-on road trip to see family across 8 states — and no, it doesn’t include camp because camp isn’t a vacation, no matter what the people in the church (or your senior pastor) might think.

There’s one stretch that is particularly challenging – January through May – because the other five stopping points are more bunched together. That makes the break we’re about to go on very welcome, and usually long overdue. We just finished up a great season of ministry – a mission trip to New Mexico, Group’s National Youth Ministry Conference, the PDYM Conference, a record-setting CLASS 101, lots of teaching opportunities (LABELS and Refuel were my favorite) and so much more. Lots of life change, lots of fulfillment.

You Own the Weekend will be fine without me. I’ll be OK not checking email for 72 hours. I’m beat. I need a break.

So tomorrow we head for Legoland! I realize that 4 kids in a hotel room might not sound like a good time to you, but I can’t wait. You won’t hear from me here on the blog for a few days, though I’m sure Twitter will be firing on all cylinders. Excited to just enjoy life and the family for 3 days. See you Tuesday!

I hear discussions about this on occasion around the office. How about you – how many Twitterers do you have sent to your phone? I added a bunch for the PDYM Conference, and am at an all-time high of 15. Yikes.

Josh GriffinMore Posts2 Ways to Catch Great Volunteers

Several times this week during the PDYM Conference I heard or used this analogy myself when talking about recruiting youth ministry volunteers. I like it … not sure where it came from … feel free to add your thoughts in the comments, too:

Cast a wide net… this is where you get up on stage and tell the whole church that you’re looking for some great volunteers to help in high school ministry. You make a passionate (while trying not to sound desperate) plea for help and talk of the rewards in Heaven for serving this important part of the church. It worked! You’ll have to screen out a few of the oddballs who want to come to the next overnighter, but you scored a couple of people to join your team.

… and be sure to use fish hooks, too. This is where you go after a specific person you think might be the perfect fit for your ministry opportunity. As opposed to going after everyone and getting no one time and time again – you think, pray and consider the perfect person. Usually these people are untouchable, unaskable (I just made that word up) or don’t fit the stereotype of youth worker. But you make the ask and hold your breath. Yes!

Cast the net wide for sure, any chance you have in front of the crowd is a marketing/heart/vision opportunity that should absolutely be taken – but don’t be afraid to move into a specific person with the ask and see if they bite. You must just be surprised which is more effective.

Josh GriffinMore PostsThe Importance of the Conference

I enjoyed Kurt’s post about making a real effort to get to a youth ministry training every year – here’s s a clip of his thoughts:

CONFERENCES ARE IMPORTANT BECAUSE…

- They are like camp for youth workers.

- You rub shoulders with other men and women “in the trenches” who share the same passion and challenges you do.

- You get ongoing training that is very specific to youth ministry.

And also this article from Ken Leslie about taking the conference home with you was great, too.

We’ve all seen students go through the “spiritual high” from camp. The same feeling rushes over us after an amazing week at a conference. There can be a few things we can do to keep the ball rolling when we go home:

  • Do Something Immediatly – Start something. Whether it is brainstorming for a new school year, contacting a leader or student and sharing info with them, or even develop a simple action plan to put into practice what you have learned. Whatever you do, don’t just go back to your normal routine and “plan” to do something with this later.
  • Organize your notes/resources – Too many times we take notes al session long but never go back over them. Find a good way to go back over your notes. Check out www.volunteeryouthministry.com or www.nickcarnes.com or www.morethandodgeball.com for a recap of each of the session.
