Josh GriffinMore PostsCelebrate Recovery Podcast Drop In

Today I got to drop into the Celebrate Recovery Podcast with Johnny Baker – I was the pastor on call today and happened to be walking by when I saw them recording their latest show. I talked about Life Hurts, God Heals – which is a recovery program for students based on many of the same principles and steps. If you haven’t checked out Celebrate Recovery, hit up their new website and see if it might be something to help your church with people dealing with addicitions.

New at Simply Youth Ministry this week is a great resource to help you with Life Hurts, God Heals groups. It is the Life Hurts, God Heals Leader Training Kit. I’ve been so impressed with our groups this year, perhaps it’s something your youth ministry could consider starting over the summer or in the Fall.

This week we kicked off a 3-week series in HSM called Scarred: Life Hurts, God Heals. Also this week we’re starting our Life Hurt, God Heals small groups. It is an amazing time of sharing healing and care for students. I met a couple of the volunteers this week and they are truly amazing. They’ve got more care in their little finger than I do in my whole body. Such good people that love God and care for students.

If you’re interested in Life Hurts in your ministry setting, check out their online community right here.

Josh GriffinMore PostsBook Review: Life’s Healing Choices

Just about done with the new book by Celebrate Recovery author John Baker. Managed to snag a copy of it up at the Summit this week. It is going to be a very popular book, especially for those in the most intense darkness – there’s some powerful testimonies of people in all sorts of situation that found healing and recovery, and included are all of the principles that John speaks about every week at the CR meetings.

My favorite part of the book, one that he keeps hitting on every few pages, is life-changing salvation from Jesus Christ. So often people question the “higher power” of AA and programs that offer recovery, but this book will leave no doubts in the minds of the readers: true recovery is incomplete without Christ.

And that’s a message we all need to remember.

Josh GriffinMore PostsPassion Service This Weekend

Had a really fun Passion venue weekend at Saddleback, we’ve got some donuts and coffee greeting people as they enter, it’s starting to turn the tent into a somewhat welcoming environment. Pastor Tom spoke this weekend on Psalm 23 – a great challenge to get rest from our busy lives and go deeper in our walk with God. Good stuff – had a testimony from the Celebrate Recovery Summit, too, and I managed to work in my “Shrimp Grits” story in the introduction. Fun!

In the middle of the message, they had scheduled a song and we instead opted for some background music while everyone rewrote Psalm 23 in their own words, shaped by the context of their personal lives. I think the temptation with Scripture is to always read it in the general, and never see it intersecting with real life. This particular idea was one I experienced at Granger back in 2004. A powerful exercise …

Getting ready for the big SHAPE series this Fall. Look out!
