Josh GriffinMore PostsSaddleback San Clemente

Finally got a chance to visit Saddleback San Clemente – our first regional campus launched last year. This is an exciting time for them, big plans for this summer include adding a Saturday night service and the big Summerfest Outreach. Should be awesome – the energy on the high school campus this morning was fantastic, it’s got a solid Saddleback feel, with a very laid back San Clemente style. So fun!

Josh GriffinMore PostsFilming a New ETV Video Today

Just finished filming a new video for the weekend in big church, had some fun with the guys and I think it’ll turn out good. We’ll see – just wrote it this morning when we had to flip/flop videos from next weekend! Yikes … here’s the script, I’ll get it in YouTube when it’s done this weekend:

ETV Father’s Day Video

(standard Josh video open, walking up the stairs to the Ped Bridge)
Hey everyone, welcome to Father’s Day Weekend here at Saddleback. We’re glad you’re here and know you’ll enjoy the message from Pastor Doug as he concludes the “Take it Like a Man” series.

(beat)
Knowing just how bad men are with directions, I thought it might be good to take a few minutes this weekend and tell you about a new way to navigate the campus in the near future. Once again, change is coming to Saddleback! You’re going to want to pay close attention to this:

(show chart of campus in board room)
So basically you start here on Portola, then you run up here, do a U-Turn, hit this circle drive, jump a barrier and cross illegally here (map starts to get really full of markers, post it notes, drawings) then you run about a

Kurt posted a new article today on loving summer over on Simply Youth Ministry. Click here to read it, here’s a clip:

Longer Days
One of the best parts about summer time is the fact that after work, there are still several hours of daylight! This means hanging in the backyard with my family, playing a late round of golf, or heading to the beach to catch a few waves. It also means a better opportunity to spend time with students. Take advantage of the extra daylight in your ministry. Here’s an idea: Move your entire midweek program outside for the summer! Whether you stay on campus, meet at a park or head to somebody’s house for a pool party, take advantage of the extra daylight.

Bored Students
I’m always surprised at how many of our students sit around all day long during the summer. They channel surf, hang out online or play video games. Certainly some of them love this daily routine, but for most junior highers it gets old by the second week of summer. Because they are so bored, it doesn’t take much on your part to provide an attractive alternative! An afternoon of bowling, flying kites in the park, a water balloon fight at the church etc. are all super simple things you can plan for your students. Tip: the key to planning these types of events is to allow students to show up spontaneously (don’t make them register ahead of time etc.) and to plan things that are just as fun for 2 kids as they are for 22.

Josh GriffinMore PostsPastors.com Article

This article about student leadership I wrote a few days ago is now up on Pastors.com. Here’s a clip:

One of the highlights from last summer was seeing students gather at Saddleback Church’s campus and learn about student leadership. As we prepare for this summer’s conference, I began to think about a few principles to help your students succeed in leadership.

It all starts with discovering a student’s passion. You might use a S.H.A.P.E. test or something official, or maybe you just sit down over Starbucks and ask them questions so they can naturally discover how God has uniquely created them. Either way, finding a “fit” is key.

Then make sure they have the margin to fulfill the commitment. Are you asking a student who is already overcommitted? Make sure you know how much they are already involved inside and outside the church ministry. Help them figure out what matters most in life, and learn to say no.

Josh GriffinMore PostsHelping Student Leaders Succeed

Here’s the first draft of an article I’m writing for next week’s Rick Warren’s Ministry Toolbox. Enjoy!

One of the highlights from last summer was seeing students gather at Saddleback Church’s campus and learning about student leadership. As we prepare for this summer’s conference, I began to think about a few principles to help your students succeed in student leadership.

It all starts with discovering a student’s passion. You might use a S.H.A.P.E. test or something official, or maybe you just sit down over Starbucks and ask them questions so they can naturally discover how God has uniquely created them. Either way, fit is key.

Then make sure they have the margin to fulfill the commitment. Are you asking a student who is already overcommitted? Make sure you know how much they are already involved inside and outside the church ministry. Help them figure out what matters most in life, and learn to say no.

Be sure to assign adult leadership. This is an ideal concept — and I’m good friends with the real world. But we know that every student leader needs a mentor who perhaps even shares his or her passion for this ministry. In my mind, they need to be “hands off” as much as possible and “hands on” as much as needed. In an effort to help them strengthen their problem-solving and critical thinking skills, ask leaders to give direction but not be in control.

Then celebrate success as the student leader takes off. Recognize the initiative that a student has given, and show appropriate public praise. The temptation is to somehow misdirect praise to you, taking credit for what God has done through the students. Don’t fall for it; let them shine in the spotlight.

Lastly, make sure there’s ongoing evaluation. This is really the place to just ask questions and see what action might need to be taken. Is there someone else who should join this team? Is there a younger student that can be brought along in mentorship? Is there a better way to do this? Is there a new version, technology that makes this easier or obsolete? Do we need to take a break?

In the end, the key is to make sure that students are where they are passionate, have the margin to stick with it, and have someone to care for and encourage them. With a little celebration when things go good and some evaluation to make it better as you go, you’ll find student leaders that will succeed and become an integral part of your student ministry.

Josh GriffinMore PostsEndless Summer in San Clemente

Had an AWESOME time in San Clemente on Sunday – they had a big summer outreach event on the high school campus to help get the word out about Saddleback’s new campus in San Clemente. About a jillion people there … OK, not that many, but the crowd was great. The weather was perfect and here’s a few of my personal highlights:

  • The U2 cover band was stunningly accurate – the guy looked just like Bono
  • The orange Camaro at the car show should have won hands down
  • Riders 4 Christ is only getting more entertaining and amazing
  • Bounce houses are simply designed to hurt small children
  • Fun seeing Jake as the lead youth guy there

UPDATE: Just saw that Leigh posted some thoughts about the cover band, too. Funny.
