Last Friday, our ministry tailgated two of the biggest games of the season. I got to admit, we were a little nervous about how well this was going to go over. We tried to do tailgates about 5 years ago but they just weren’t working so we cut them. But, with our huge focus on campus outreach this year, we thought it was worth another try.
We decided to learn from our past and completely reinvent how we did tailgate parties. The first big difference was our location. This year, we held our parties at parks that were near the schools. We did this for a few reasons… well one reason, the schools said no. It was a frustrating thing to hear because there are so many people that tailgate on campus anyway, but we would rather call and get a “no,” than to go and hurt the reputation of our ministry. Because of that, we ended up doing out parties at the parks, and we loved it! Having it at a park let us do more activities (ultimate Frisbee, Football, Spikeball, etc.) that kept students at the event, giving us more relational opportunity. While having the tailgate in the campus parking lot would have given us a more convenient location, I feel like students would have grabbed food and left, giving us little face time with students.
As far as the event itself, we kept it simple and fun. The games that we tailgated for were the big rival games so we made sure to capitalize on their school spirit. We decorated everything in school colors! We had the balloons, tablecloths, streamers… the whole bit. We even set up a “War Paint” booth, where students could get their face painted for the game that night! Once students started coming over, we handed out some Frisbees, footballs, volleyballs, set up a game of Spikeball, and threw a dance party in the parking lot. We fueled them up for the big night by giving them pizza, cupcakes, cookies, chips, soda, and anything else that we found cheap. The event as a whole was super fun and super easy.
I am so happy with how it all turned out. We got to meet so many new students and got to make some awesome memories with our regulars! Tailgates can be a great outreach opportunity and can work for a ton of ministries out there because there are so many different ways to do them. I’m already thinking of ways to take ours to the next level!
Has your ministry tailgated a game before? How did you do it?

Fun little video promoting a couple of HSM’s upcoming tailgate parties. Lots of energy and capturing that awesome school spirit. We picked the 2 biggest games of the year that hit 4 of our big 5 high schools. Going to be a GREAT night!

Weekend Teaching Series: You Own the Weekend: Tesoro HS (series finale, week 5 of 5)
Sermon in a Sentence: We all have sorrow, pain but God turns it into joy and hope.
Service Length: 66 minutes
Understandable Message: Tesoro High School juniors Chad and Ryan spoke this weekend with a great video testimony from Gabby in the middle. They did an incredible job teaching about how pain is universal but through the love and power of Christ was can be filled with hope and joy. They team-taught through 3 stories of the Bible – the healing of the blind man, the woman at the well and Peter denying Jesus. Both speakers also referenced the Canis Majoris star (Latin translation meaning Big Dog) and how God is infinitely bigger than all of us and His ways are far beyond ours. Really challenging talks from incredibly articulate and passionate students.
Element of Fun/Positive Environment: This weekend they brought in the band Shoot Up the Cat (a local band made up of Tesoro students) and played a couple of great videos as well. You can see their Hot Rod promo video here and the No services for Easter video here. They also had a ton of greeters, lots of great decorations and overall a lot of fun!
Music Playlist: Jackie Wants a Black Eye (Shoot Up the Cat cover), You Hold Me Now, Amazing Grace, It Is Well, Your Love Never Fails
Favorite Moment: I love the sheer number of students involved – it is one of the my favorite things we do all year – students who normally sit now serve. The decorations team, the T-shirts, banner, greeters, band – so much of is was so good this week and for the whole series. So proud of our students!
Up next: OFF (Easter weekend, everyone goes to big church)
Weekend Teaching Series: You Own the Weekend: Tesoro HS (week 3 of 5)
Sermon in a Sentence: The world will try to steal our identity, but our true identity is in Jesus Christ.
Service Length: 74 minutes
Understandable Message: This week two students shared the message on identity – how God gives us a new identity in Jesus Christ and how the world is constantly trying to steal that identity away from us and claim us as one of their own. The message was taught by students who had a couple of really engaging elements to their talk. The first was the giant “T” on stage painted in school colors, actually transformed to a cross at the end of the message. They talked about how the point of their teaching was that our true identity was in Christ and the cross, not in what school you attend. It was a great moment in the service! The students also made a little takeaway, where you could put your thumbprint on a business card which had a verse on it and was to be a remidner that we are Christs, our identity is in Him.
Element of Fun/Positive Environment: Tesoro opened with Hello, Goodbye (Glee Cast version) and students decorated the refinery with all sorts of pictures of Tesoro students. They did a great job of theming the student room, as well as creating shirts and having tons of greeters. They also had a little spoken word piece before and after the message – driving home the concept of identity in Christ. You Own the Weekend is all about students doing everything … and it seems like they did think of most everything. Super cool.
Music Playlist: Yours Forever, One Pure and Holy Passion Work in Us, Burning Ones, Yes You Have
Favorite Moment: The transformed Tesoro logo into a cross became part of the response time during the last couple of songs. Students were asked to come onstage and place their thumbprint on the cross as a symbol of their identity in Him. Everyone of us is unique (thumbprint) but also one in Christ as followers of Him. Great moment and teaching!
