Josh GriffinMore PostsEmail is Dead. Long Live Texting.

I’ve been excited about moving our student ministry quickly into the texting generation, and even more now in light of this post today about students and how they prefer to communicate.

3. Text messages are brief and to the point. The person texting doesn’t waste words; in fact, they usually abbreviate the message.

4. Text messaging is in your control. The receiver can stop when they want to. This kind of control is attractive to students today. They want communication on their terms.

Students today are inundated with messages, from every side. I believe they’re most likely to respond to a text message because it allows them fast, current, relevant communication with friends–but at a safe distance. They like intimacy without a lot of vulnerability.

Here’s a link to all of the posts I’ve made about texting here on the blog if you want to see what tools we’re using and why.

Josh GriffinMore PostsBest Year Ever – Week 2

best_yeareer.jpg

Best Year Ever Week 2 of 2 is now in the can, what a great weekend! We had a great cover song from Foo Fighters up front, then transitioned into a nice welcome and funny Student Zone video. We continued to plug texting, and were super excited to see how many students got our innagural text this week. After a game of Reverse Cell Phone Shootout (we call someone in the crowd instead of them calling us) I did the series recap and set up the night. My favorite part was student testimonies of putting these principles into action – then Doug Fields led us in part 2 of Best Year Ever by emapasizing walk with Jesus. So fun!

Josh GriffinMore PostsHSM Starts Texting

OK, we went with TxTsignal that I blogged about before – I’ll give you a review when we’re 30 days in. We loved the free trial, and are planning on giving the service a real run for it’s money. If you want to receive texts from HSM, you can sign up yourself right here! So exciting – a new day of communicating has arrived. We send out first SMS out tonight!

Josh GriffinMore PostsTexting Students

This weekend at High School Ministry we concentrated on collecting cell phone numbers of students so we can build a database of numbers to text announcements, information and all of the other stuff we want to communicate. Who knew that about half of youth ministry was marketing? We gave away a David Crowder CD or a free T-shirt for everyone who signed up (we had them leftover from something, shhhh) – we’ll probably do this every week in January and then randomly throughout the year to grab the new students and updte changes.

So we’re thinking about using the website TXTSignal on a recommendation from a friend – but I’d love to know what others are using so we are sure to land on the right system. So who’s a) done the research or b) had good success with a system already?

C u later lol rotfl.

Josh GriffinMore PostsWelcome to the Moleskin Club

So, I may have originally made fun of the geeks of the world out there that carry a Moleskin journal with them. Now I’m taking one out for a spin – I’ve found out that bringing the PPC-6700 to meetings people think I’m texting and doing email (and they would be right), and something old school and offline might give off the impression I’m actually paying attention.

Josh GriffinMore PostsLIVE Television

Whew! We’re live to over 200 locations across North America with the AIDS Youth Summit at Saddleback Church. What an exciting morning! Doing a conference is challenging enough, but having it broadcast via sattelite makes me feel a bit like SNL. So cool.

Here’s a shot from one of the simulcast churches – they are texting in attendance numbers and even sent in this Picture Mail.

Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!

Josh GriffinMore PostsThe Texting Generation

Larry Davis has some good insight on texting and student ministry today in his new article, too. Here’s an excerpt, I think it’s worth the read:

We also need to teach our students to take a Sabbath break! They do not need to be constantly plugged in. I get texts sometimes from students at 2AM and when I forget to turn my phone off my wife is the one that I am answering to! I recently did a Sunday message on this and asked the students to do a “texting fast” for one week. Many complained that they just could not do it! I told them that if they could not then that cell phone had too high of a priority in their life. Instead of texting that week they just needed to pick the phone up and call someone. Many students told me that their friends would not answer when they called because it was just too personal and time consuming when the called instead of texting. While it was tough it helped them understand that the only thing which we should be completely dependant on is Christ.

Lastly, I would encourage parents to limit the amount of air time a student gets. This helps monitor how much texting is being done and also helps them to take those needed breaks. In a recent student survey at our church a student recorded that they sent over 4,800 texts in two weeks! There are so many more areas to touch on this subject and I could go on and on. What is really important is that you are made aware of this issue and you help compensate for the downfalls by enhancing personal student to student interaction. If you have any questions, please feel free to text me (LOL)!

Josh GriffinMore PostsChatting between PC – Xbox 360 – Phone

Yes, my Xbox360 will be able to do all of that in the near future. How cool is this?

With the arrival of the downloadable update the week of May 7, Xbox 360 users will be able to use the Windows Live Messenger service to chat with users of Windows PCs and Windows Mobile-powered devices.

Microsoft says that the Xbox Live community stands at 6 million users who send over 2 million voice and text messages daily, whereas Windows Live Messenger boasts over 260 million active accounts.

The spring update will also introduce QWERTY keyboard support so Xbox 360 owners don’t have to mess with the menu-based keyboard, although mouse/keyboard gameplay support is still absent. The update will support a standard USB keyboard as well as an Xbox 360 controller-based mini-keyboard add-on that connects to the controller. A price for the controller texting device is unannounced at this time, although Microsoft did reveal a summer release time frame.
