Josh GriffinMore PostsXbox 360 Outsells the PS3 and Wii

Game Informer posted the numbers of console sales and surprisingly, the PS3 had less than 200,000 units. The Wii’s launch was more than a success, but in a bold move – the 360 sold more than both of them. That’s the benefit of a console that doesn’t have the launch pains – surely PS3 would sell out everywhere if they could just make more of them. Here’s a clip:

On the console side, the data reveals 197,000 PlayStation 3 consoles were sold, which is more than half of the promised 400,000 consoles Sony had plan to ship, which backs the news that Sony only shipped 200,000 consoles at launch. Nintendo more than doubled the PS3 numbers and sold 476,000 Wiis. However Microsoft came out on top selling through 511,000 Xbox 360 consoles.

Josh GriffinMore PostsReview of Sneak King

As you know, Elliott hooked me up with the new Burger King Xbox 360 games for selling his PS3 on eBay this past week. We’re saving a couple as Christmas gifts for the kids, but we opened 1 of the 3 titles tonight: Sneak King. Here’s my review:

First of all kudos to Burger King for making these games. This is a stroke of genius – I’ll fast forward through a BK advertisement on TV, but I’ll sit for 2 hours playing the world’s longest commercial. Genius! Gamers love cheap games, especially if they’re somewhat innovative or counter-cultural, and likewise we love the Double Whopper. Feels already like this is going to be a good time.

Secondly, it looks and plays pretty well. This isn’t Gears of War or anything like that, but it is a nice-looking game that is pretty addictive. It’s fun, even if a little creepy – is it just me or is the King a little, uh, disturbing? Either way, the game is fun to play. Sneaking up on people and giving them a Crossn’wich or BK coffee has never been more fun. Hmmm … I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.

Finally, the game has achievements, which ever gamer love to accumulate. One of the best parts of the 360′s persistent online LIVE status of the console is friends lists, reputation and Gamerscore. Already unlocked 4 achievements, I’ll get the rest tonight!

All in all, a innovative tactic to get gamers into BK, get them back to BK and let them have a bit of fun in the meantime. The game looks nice and is fun to play and best of all, it’s an easy boost to my Gamerscore. I just hope Taco Bell or Carl’s Jr. is lined up next … because I’ll be first in line to get the games!

Josh GriffinMore Posts3 New Burger King Xbox 360 Games

For helping Doug Elliot sell his PS3 on eBay, he’s buying me the Burger King games as a little thank you gift. Wired just posted their reviews of the games – so now I’m really excited.

Big Bumpin’ puts you behind the padded wheel of an amusement park bumper car. Several different arenas feature such family-friendly enhancements as saw blades and trap doors, and you compete against other bumper drivers in competitions ranging from a soccerlike game to a destruction derby.

This title has “party game” spray-painted all over it: It’s not much to look at when sitting and playing by yourself, but it’s a good game to pull out when some friends of varying skill with a controller come over and want to have some fun, or if your online clan is looking for a change of pace. One good evening of bumping each other off should justify the four bucks easily.

Josh GriffinMore PostsWhy Gears of War Rocks

You know how I feel. My friend Tony bought a 360 this weekend just to play the game. And Wired likes it, too. Here’s a clip:

And the game really is awesome. Indeed, it is staggeringly, derangedly so. I popped Gears of War into my Xbox 360 and sat in a cybernetic haze for three straight hours, emerging with my stomach in fist-size knots, so emotionally and cognitively depleted that I had to consult the instructions on the side of the box before I was able to cook a bag of microwave popcorn — which, come to think of it, was my only meal for the rest of the evening because I had to go back and play until I collapsed.

Normally, I am the first guy to complain about the lack of creativity in today’s games. I’ve argued many times that games are being held back by publishers who refuse to experiment — and insist on sticking to the same five or six numbingly familiar genres. Shouldn’t we be breaking ground with risky new forms of play? Do we really need yet another first-person shooter?

Well, Gears of War convinces me that jeez, maybe we do. That’s because creativity does not come only from a daring, new art form or weird new genre. It also comes from a dog-eared, well-worn genre that is proven to work — and is constantly tweaked by artists who love it.

Josh GriffinMore PostsPicture in Picture

So I’ve got quite a bit of time on my hands this weekend in recovery and all. I’ve been watching lots of football and playing a fair share of Xbox 360.

And now I can do both at the same time.

Check out this picture above – the TV is a year old, and I just figured out a picture-by-picture trick it can do. It splits my screen into 3/5 and 2/5- the larger side for football in HD and volume, the smaller for Xbox 360 in HD.

Now if I just had a robot to bring me cold drinks … shoot.

Josh GriffinMore PostsMy First Downloaded HD Movie

So the inaugural movie wasn’t all that great – Poseidon is at best a C-. Probably one of the most expensive C-’s ever. It has some moments of amazing special effects, some very average special effects and pretty average acting throughout. Josh Lucas reminds us that he isn’t a strong enough character to be the leading man once again. Oh well.

But the way I watched it … amazing. Here’s the highlights:

  • Movie took a little more than 2 hours to download on my Xbox 360
  • Comes with no extras, just the movie itself (4.5GB)
  • The Xbox 360 remote, which I haven’t used hardly at all to this point, is perfect
  • Amazing 720p near-perfect picture quality
  • Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround
  • Ability to pause/resume on demand
  • Rental lasts 24 hours after first viewing, or up to 14 days if you don’t watch it
  • Automatic delete after either license expires
  • The cost? About $5

Brilliant. I will watch another tomorrow night. V for Vendetta, perhaps?

Josh GriffinMore PostsHD-DVD or BluRay? Neither.

So there’s a big “format” debate in the post-DVD world, and I think I may have stumbled on the ultimate solution.

Sony’s PS3 comes with a Blu-Ray DVD player, and the Xbox 360 has a $199 add-on player that allows you to play HD-DVD movies on your high definition screens. So who will win the format war? Sony lost years ago in the VHS vs. Beta-max debate, for history’s sake. And both of the format’s stand-alone players (with no game console) are priced out of the average person’s price range – for now. Probably nearing $1,000 to play a disc with a super hi-res copy of the movie and a few extras.

The solution? Download your movie directly in HD. Forget either disc format. Forget discs.

Tonight I’ll be watching Poseidon, my first digital download HD movie – downloaded in 720p on my 360′s hard drive. 4.5 gigs, took a couple hours to download … and once the service expands to offer every release, offers even higher quality at faster speeds, I just can’t imagine why I would rent another disc again.

This is going to make discs a thing of the past. Full review after the show.

Josh GriffinMore PostsVideo Game Review: Gears of War

I’ve been meaning to review this game for a few days now – beat it on the “Casual” difficulty with friends over Xbox Live, then the end of last week beat it on “Hardcore” with Tony over at my house.

In short, Gears of War is one of the most exhilarating and fun games to play in a long time. My Xbox 360 has been taking a beating on this one, and from what I hear it might just curb stomp the reign of Halo 2 on the console. It is by far the most beautiful game I’ve ever played, by far one of funnest, and definitely one of the slickest shows in town. Of course, this is the first shooter truly designed to take advantage of my HDTV’s highest settings – and it shows up in widescreen glory.

I’ve been excited about this game for a long time (like at E3 and I met CliffyB, the game’s lead designer) and it definitely lived up to the hype. This is reason enough to persuade you to beg on your hands and knees for a 360 for Christmas.

The only difficulty in a totally resounding review of the game is the fact that it is rated “M” for Mature – which means it’s super scary, includes a fair amount of swearing and plenty of violence as you crush the Locust. This isn’t a game you’re going to play at the next Xbox Overnighter of Halo-ween with the younglings. You’ve got to wrestle with your own limits and standards on this one, but if it’s something that lands in the OK side of the court, it will blow you away.

Literally.

Josh GriffinMore PostsMy Xbox 360 Plays Movies

As of today, my Xbox 360 can play and download HD movies – which meanes they land in better resolution than a standard DVD and I don’t have to put on clothes to go to Blockbuster or worry about kids scratching a rental disc. All this in the time it takes me to get a soda and nuke some popcorn, give or take. Microsoft today launched a whole new side of the 360 – it can do TV shows, music videos, demos, even whole games … shoot, it can do pretty much anything except get me some Ruffles and French Onion dip.

Which sound so nice right about now.

And now I read that the promotion with Burger King has started … they’ve got $3.99 Xbox 360 mini-games for sale at the resturants … how great is that?
