I have THE BEST MACBOOK PRO!!! Be jealous all you hipster youth workers. I have the MacBook Pro (MBP) you wish you had…the Genius at the Apple Store called it…VINTAGE!
Alright, this kind of vintage is not good, I am just trying to make myself feel better. I took one of my MBPs to the Apple store this weekend. The fan was running loud and the MBP was getting HOT. Last time this happened, the Genius I spoke with took it in their secret room and worked his magic. He told me that the motherboard had a thick blanket of dust on it making the fan run hard and the machine run hot. A year later it is happening all over again, but this time I was shut down. The Genius said my MBP had reached “Vintage Status.“ This means he is not allowed to open the body to look under the hood… if he broke something, because of its age, he would not be able to fix it (it is about 6 years old).
I was a little frustrated, but I understood. The MBP works find (he did run a diagnostic he just wouldn’t open it), the loud fan and heat are more of an inconvenience. Before I left, I asked if there’s anything I can do at home. He didn’t recommend it, but he gave me a web address. He said the site ifixit.com has some user-friendly repair and service manuals that will help me fix not just MBPs but all kinds of hardware. The punch line is… they are all FREE.
If you have a broken; soundboard, camera, iPod, computer, etc. check out ifixit.com and see if you can fix it yourself.
Have fun fixin’ stuff!
