Using Journals for a Weekend Series
I mentioned that we’re not using a bulletin for 6 weeks, instead replacing it with a simple little journal for students to record their learnings and thoughts over the 40 Days of Love series. Here’s what I’m thinking about the progress so far:
A few students are really using it
This is what is the exciting part – some students are really using their notebooks as a journal for the 40 days. They are in the minority, but it is cool to see some really filling up with devotional notes, thoughts, verses, questions and talk outlines. You need plenty of extra journals for those that lose it
We bought enough for maybe 1.5x the current student attendance on the weekend. The ratio seems to be holding up right now, we’ve got 2 weeks left and supplies are starting to show it. Every student got one week one, every new student since has gotten one, and yes, students who lost theirs got a second … or third, in a few cases. The point it to have a bunch extra on hand if you give this idea a shot. You’re going to throw a bunch away
This pains me and the budget - but we’ve thrown a bunch away. For one reason or another, they had to be tossed. I’m sure the vast majority of bulletins get tossed as well, but it hurts more because of the increased cost. You won’t have a bulletin for announcements
It’s nice not to have a bulletin deadline for your teaching outline, but you also lose the marketing space and welcoming messages for visiting students. We’ve transitioned to verbal announcements, a few individual print pieces and slides on the screen for the 40 days. I miss the printed dates and events right there in the bulletin.
So all in all – a successful experiment! I don’t see us moving away from bulletins long term, but it’s been a good change for this series.
