I'm curious about the 5-3-1 rule (what is it?!). Basically at my church we do tons of one-on-one ministry but as a rule to not mix genders in any sort of counseling or seclusion. We're pretty blessed not to have much/any trouble with parents trusting us with their kids, but we do a good job of being sensitive and aware.
I'm trying to write a humorous "How You Know You're Involved In Youth Ministry" and wondered if anyone has some funny resources. My plan is to rewrite it with things that are unique to our church and give it to the other youth leaders.
That's enough rambling for a comment I think. ;) Thanks!

I really like this 5-3-1 rule because it takes off the pressure to mentor every kid you come in contact with. This is a realistic goal that will energize you to continue to mentor, rather than be burned out from it!

I'd be interested in seeing Dave's questions addressed, also. The last thing I want to do is attract a lawsuit for the church...

hey josh. in australia over the last 10 years, youth ministry (and other industries working with children) has worked hard at being above reproach in the area of child protection. it means we're careful with one to one time with students.
i've noted before in PDYM that doug talks about taking teenagers on errands. i think it's a good thing, but i'm aware of legislation, youth ministry guidelines and being above reproach.
what type of policies do you have regarding this?
is there legislation guiding it at all?
would the updated PDYM reflect any of this?
i think junior high and senior high are different. (in australia, 15 and under are "children". 16 and 17 are "young people" and 18+ are "adults")
any thoughts?
