I have found series to be a great interest draw for my students. And, if I am doing it right, these series will based on what my students want to hear or need to hear. Because of this, 1-offs, as Josh has said, are great fillers and provides opportunities for other messages and speakers to share. Great post Josh!

I started scheduling these in between series last year and labeled them "fill lessons." I love all your great reasons for having these, but I've got another one: it allows for weather cancellations without turning over your whole schedule! I know in So Cal you don't have snow, but in the Northeast I've had to face the decision in the past of "what week do I cut from this series?" That's a hard call when you've spent time creating a dynamic arc. With these fill lessons between series, you can bump that rather than an important learning element from the series! Thanks Josh!

To me it's funny that there is an assumption that working with series is the norm. I come from a culture where "One hit wonders" are the norm and series are something special. I like the idea of keeping kids on their toes... with series they might just have a bad experience and not be interested in the rest of them because of a first bad impression. It be nice to not have just one in between, but why not a whole month?

This leaves the door wide open for a new teacher to teach on a topics that they can come up with and own instead of a topic they are forced into (obviously we would not force someone to teach something we know they would not be successful at but you get my point).
