We have an application that potential volunteers fill out that includes a spot for them to provide references - one has to be a current or previous pastor. I've asked for the money to do background checks, but haven't ever gotten it. We're a smallish church, which works against us financially, but for us in that just about anyone who's ever applied is well known by someone else within the leadership of the church. But, I'd still feel a lot better if I could do the checks... I’m one of the “no” votes, sadly. But I have heard from some in the past that they don't feel it's their place as a church to dig into someone's personal life. They just don't realize that they are going to be in a world of hurt when a volunteer is caught with a hand in the cookie jar. We do.
