At the church I am at now, yes. But where I was for the last 3 years absolutely not. Actually, when I was a youth pastor at my previous church my wife and I would go to another church on Saturday nights for the benefit of our souls.

No, I most likely wouldn't attend the church that I currently serve at. There are just different things that I would like to see but which don't fit into this church. Of course there are problems here but thats ok. There are problems everywhere, a lot of which I probably wouldn't know about if I wasn't on staff here.

In answer to the question above: I think that God's calling has the most to do with anything. I recently had a job offer to move to a church that i would rather be apart of, in an area that i like better, with better pay and benefits, less problems, and better volunteers but i turned it down because i don't believe that is where God wants me to be right now. I won't go anywhere that i'm not called to, and i certainly won't stay here one minute longer than he calls me to. I think that right now i think that God wants me here longer "just for the needs of the youth", but i'm ok with that. there certainly isn't anything wrong with that, God just isn't done using me here yet.

On the other hand i think that God would call you where you can share the vision of the church, or to change either your vision or use you as a tool to help change theirs.

Sorry i know i've rambled and haven't really accomplished anything.

I would not "attend" the church that I currently serving as youth minister. My wife and I would typically seek out a congregation that focused more on a holistic approach to meeting the needs of others rather than a superficial "quick fix" that our church typically offers the community. Something less than a construction team and more of a redeeming agent in the world for Christ. So no I found not go here if I did not serve the parents and students here at this location.

However, I have a question to throw in the mix. At what point should a minister "compromise" being able to serve in a ministerial role with a certain people at the expense of serving in a church he really wants to be involved in completely?

In other words...Is it acceptable for a youth minister to stay and serve at a local church "just for the needs of the youth" or is it necessary that he must be completely on board with the "vision" of the rest of the church elders/pastors/deacons, etc?

My situation is a little different. I am a 51-year-old paid part-time youth director. I didn't "choose" my church. I was born into it :-). Caring adults there who loved the Lord (were they called "youth workers" in the early 70's?) led me to Jesus at the age of 14. We've had our share of challenges and there was a point in time when a minister was sent to our church with the task of closing it and merging our congregation with another nearby. But through all the years a core of believers stayed true to the calling of Jesus - to love - right through financially hard times, poor preachers, differences in vision, construction and growing pains, deaths and illnesses and other crises. This core has grown into a fellowship of believers that continues to be a loving, caring, welcoming, supportive community where I have raised my own children (now both in college), and where my husband and I are committed to serving. We are in an area that is somewhat transient because of a large military presence. Folks come and go (and often come back!). I realize we don't all have the option to remain in a church for a long time. And I guess that my situation is a little unique. I didn't choose youth ministry as a vocation. After many years as a volunteer I was offered a paid position which I've held for the past 9 years. But I think for any church or ministry to overcome obstacles and survive and grow and become a welcoming place and a light to the community in which it serves, it takes a lot of prayer and patience and time and commitment. In every church there are people who love God and love that church. People who've been around for a long time, or people who are brand new. People who desire to see the church grow and thrive and fulfill its purpose. People who are open to God's leading. Everyone who works and worships here is encouraged to think about the message we send to each person who walks through our doors, even if it's the technician who drops in to repair the soda machine. To come to this point it has taken some committed people and some time. Actually, a LOT of time. But I'm thankful God didn't give up on us or me. If we don't give up, if we just keep planting the seeds, He is faithful and takes care of the harvest.

I'm not in the ministry but I am very involved in the children’s ministry where I attend church. I need to tell you something about our youth director so you will understand my latter comments. Our youth minister has the best intentions but there are times I wonder what he is thinking. The best intentions in that he cares for young souls and is in God's word. I wonder what he is thinking; for example at the beginning of one mid-week evening service a teen girl who had not been in church for a few months came in. I greeted her told her I was happy to see her. The youth director turned and when he saw her he got a surprised look on his face and blurted, “What are you doing here?” I could see the train wreck inside her by the look on her face. She never came back. The youth director was totally oblivious to what he had done to this girl. Her parents were in the middle of a bad divorce and she had come to church for a little support and maybe some hope. I have been there many times over the years when our youth director has repeated this type of inconsiderate conduct.

I said all that to say this. I hold myself and the staff of my church responsible for the answer to the question; would you attend your own church? If you wouldn’t, ARE YOU PART OF THE PROBLEM? My YD is a big part of that problem. I have spoken to him in love many, many times over the years. He just doesn’t get it. I have to assume he is the “simple things” God tells us he will use to confound the wise because if that is not the case he is knowingly driving people away. If I thought he was doing this knowingly I would leave in a second.

I would be open to any suggestions as how to possible help my YD. BTW the senior pastor thinks the YD is doing a great job.

I ask myself this all the time, because I see areas where we need to change, but feel powerless to make those changes. I can do my personal best to make the church a place I would be proud to attend and invite my peers to, but unless the entire congregation is of the same spirit and shares the same vision, you will be dissatified.

I believe this is the greatest cause of staff turnover. We feel a call to a new vision or direction, but are unable to get the congregation to embrace it. Once you have reached this point, you will not be satisfied doing the same old, same old. You will either leave to somewhere that shares your vision, or try to force the vision, which will not end well for anybody.

I asked this question a few years back on the YS forums, and over 50% said no. I think it was around 65%. That's sad. And the "first time visitor" comment that Pastor Jeff asked above is a big one too.

Thankfully, the church were I am now is one I'd like to attend even if I didn't work here (though I'm not in youth ministry). My wife and I visited once because a friend is the pastor and we actually WISHED we could attend here. And now we do.

I wonder if this is part of the reason that some churches like to hire their staff from WITHIN the church.

If you would not attend the church you are currently serving at if you were not paid then do you see your position as a ministry or just a job? Is there a difference? I have been at a place where it felt more like a job than a ministry where I wanted to be if I had the choice.

If you were a first time visitor to your church last Sunday, would you come back this Sunday?

Probably, but is hard to say, because I am bias (sr. pastor and I are good friends as well as co-ministers). There are definately weeks where I have told my wife on the way home, "if I were visiting I wouldn't come back."

Some times we miss the mark.

I just moved to Para-Church youth ministry so I get to go to church wherever I want now. Yea!!! But in the last 6 years between three churches, there's only one I would have gone to whether I worked there or not. A lot of it has to do with the style of the music but also the pastor. And the fact that the other two weren't very visitor friendly.

Great question, and one that I've heard before. When I've heard it before, the answer was a big No! But at the church that I'm at now, absolutely!

Maybe your next question could be, "Is there any church in the world that could entice you to leave your current YM position to come and do the same thing at their church?".
For the first time in my life the answer is no. There are many churches that I love to follow and believe in very strongly, I learn a lot of great things from them. But I believe so strongly in the vision of my church in this community, that while there might be "more attractive" jobs .. there isn't one position in the world that I would leave here for today.

Where I am now, I would say yes. I have been at churches in the past that the answer would have be NO, but it wasn't the case when I originally called to those churches. I think that over time at these past churches, God had given me release from my call and was preparing me to move on.

I think, for me, an interesting part of this poll would be if I would come to my church *now* or if I would've stuck with it for the past year...

I don't know if I would have got past the first couple of Sundays. But, if I decided to not be a YP anymore...I'd probably go here.

I think there's a difference, and it's a telling one...
