About 2 years ago we started this radical shift too. Even killing small groups because it had become more program than relationship. It's been really hard explaining to potential adult volunteers about "what" we do, but those who catch the vision are making kingdom differences.

I'm excited to hear this, and glad to have a brother on the journey, so we can share together. I need to get you out to VA sometime, would love your perspective. Come with Taffy and the band in March!?

Joshua
thanks for the emphasis on relational ministry. For too long we have relied upon "megaphone" ministry where we just offload information. I am looking forward to the continuation of this conversation. We need people and programs that are living out principle-centered ministry.

In trying to rebuild a ministry, devastated by short-term youth ministers, led by a moral failure of the guy who was successful, my focus wasn't on the "show" but on leaders investing in kids lives. After two years, and finally seeing the payoff, I was fired due to a "lack of success". It also didn't help that the first guy was hired back to be my supervisor!

I decided long ago that the show will only attract kids and keep them for so long, until the next big thing. Finding adults that care about teenagers and are willing to invest in their lives is the payoff. Attendance isn't the measuring stick of success, the number of disciples who are living out their faith in the real world and sharing Jesus is the better measure. I'm looking for a church that feels the same.

I love this Josh. Lots of people talk about 'people not programs' but I think leaders are nervous about going there because a program is a nice tangible thing that makes it easy to justify to your boss why they shouldn't fire you.

Thanks for your vision, your commitment and your heart for the Kingdom. And thanks for sharing the journey with the rest of us =)
