The Word "Actually"

on February 1st, 2007

I don’t like this word. People use it in sentences like:

  • that was actually pretty good move
  • that was funny, actually
  • that was actually a decent movie

The word “actually” implies surprise.

And maybe it’s directed toward your abilities, your skills, your humor, your talent. I don’t know, I just seem to notice it when people use it. Now, I’m OK when it’s truly an unexpected moment like a movie that has Ashton Kutcher in it not being completely laughable.

But when someone has a good idea or thought … even if it is a surprise, I don’t like that word. Oh well, just a Thursday rant.

for those who don’t know, this blog is a reaction to two things: (a) every conversation with jana and (b) nearly every conversation with ryanne.
