- Just heard that Taylor Guitars is giving away five free guitars at our Radicalis conference next week! I found this interesting because I had heard in the past that Taylor never gives away free guitars…that they don’t sponsor musicians etc. So this seems like a pretty big deal. As a fun side note, Bob Taylor served on the board of elders while I was at Skyline Church in San Diego and both of his daughters attended our junior high ministry. Now that my son, Cole, is an avid guitar player I have always wanted to try to get a deal on a Taylor for him….you know, Bob’s way of saying “thank you”. But to date, I haven’t found the courage to ask.

- This weekend we are starting a new series called, “Cup O’ Joe”. We are decorating the stage like a coffee shop and I will be telling the story of a different Old Testament hero of the faith each week. Each person highlighted will have a name that starts with “JO” (thus the creative, and somewhat confusing, title/theme of the series). We are teaching on Jonah, Joseph and Joshua. I must confess that I’m a sucker for a freebie, especially iPhone apps, but sometimes it’s hard to find good ones. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the quality of the ones that FreeAppADay.com has been giving out. It’s been mostly games, but I’ve snagged a couple of fun ones. If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch it’s worth checking out. Remember each app is only Free for one day, so it might be something you want to check daily, or they also allow you to sign up for emails to notify you of the freebies for the categories you are interested in.

Haiti?

My thoughts have been with everyone in Haiti for the last several days. As many of yours have as well. What a horrific tragedy. The questions are already coming in to our office, “Are you going to have any trips to Haiti?” And that poses a dilemma for us. We didn’t have any ministry partners in Haiti before the disaster. And it doesn’t feel right to try and connect with people at this point who have way to much to do besides take calls from us…

So here’s what we are doing and I encourage you to do the same for now. We are giving as individuals and as an organization to our friends at World Vision. World Vision was on the ground from the beginning and is doing all that it can to bring aid. We also have a relationship with Compassion International and I know that theyhave been involved from the beginning as well. The people at World Vision and Compassion are amazing, passionate followers of Jesus that will be doing everything they can to bring healing and hope to Haiti. Please consider supporting them during this incredible time of need.

There will be time to go and help inHaiti… and that time willlastfor years!The ability to travel there andhelp will start very soon. My suggestion to all of us would be to offer financial support to those best positioned to help during this time. And consider going to help when things [...]

Been playing around with YouVersion on and off the past few days, and absolutely loving it.

Honestly, this is going to be a great tool. Perhaps one of the most significant innovations in our niche in a long time. Basically it is a community version of the Bible, allowing you to post comments, insight, learnings, video and more to the website. You also get your journal for personal thoughts you want to keep private. On it’s own it is essentially an online Bible – with the community and the tools they are providing it is far more than that. It will become a massive pool for youth workers to collaborate share and take their ministries far beyond their current state.

YouVersion isn’t quite ready for primetime, the search function has a ways to go yet and honestly there’s just not enough versions of the Bible for it to be universally accepted/used. Having said that, I’m confident they will add more versions of the Bible and the search feature, just in the time I’ve been checking it out, has improved drastically.

There is one word I want to use to describe the potential of this site: remarkable.

Honestly, imagine a place where you search for verses or topics, grab maps, illustrations, a testimony and a video as you prepare your talk. Imagine a place where youth workers congregate to share outlines, slides and MP3s with each other – all centered around the Bible. I love it – and can’t wait until everyone sees in in the Beta in the coming weeks. Brilliant work, gang.
